The Lighthouse(s) at Dungeness (2021)
'The Lighthouse(s) at Dungeness' is a photo essay of the landscape and environment surrounding the two lighthouses that stand at Dungeness, Romney Marsh. The initial realisation of this project came from my childhood fascination with everything coastal related; boats, lifeboats and lighthouses. Dungeness and it's light-towers are rich with history and, after doing research, I became heavily intrigued by the unusual dynamic, and perhaps contrast, of the natural landscape with the infrastructure that has developed over many years at the southernmost point of Romney Marsh.
This environment is unique, and is particularly rare to find completely free of people. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, the Dungeness Estate was closed to vehicles, meaning it was almost entirely empty. I took this opportunity to explore the landscape with as much freedom as possible. My aim with this project was to explore how the lighthouses, being such prominent structures in a flat landscape, are seemingly moulded into the environment, whilst simultaneously attempting to create an honest and ‘complete’ portrayal of the infrastructure and community present at Dungeness.
This project was printed as a 44 page publication, in a one-time limited run of copies.
